Mrs. Joy

V Joy

Vanessa Joy graduated cum laude from Point Loma Nazarene University with a M.A. in Teaching. As part of her Master’s thesis, she conducted a research study on whether self reflection and goal setting could help students to achieve greater growth in Math (it can!). She also has her Multiple Subject, General Science, and Industrial Technology teaching credentials and has taught a wide range of ages from 4th grade to 8th grade. Here in SDUSD, Ms. Joy has participated in the Leaders in Innovation program, working with other educators in the district to continue to implement Project Based Learning in the curriculum.

Here at Golden Hill, Ms. Joy teaches 8th grade English and History in a multidisciplinary course called ‘Humanities’. In Humanities Ms. Joy blends informing students on present day issues with their ties to the historical background of the topic, applying the learning through written projects. One recent project students have engaged with is called “Project DisInformation” where students learned about media literacy and created informational presentations to educate others on making thoughtful choices in their consumption and understanding of the news. Ms. Joy also leads the Makers Lab here at Golden Hill, teaching the middle school “Gateway to Technology” STEM course through Project Lead the Way with a focus on Design and Modeling. In this course, students work through understanding design problems, coming up with solutions and documenting their designs through sketches and with the use of CAD software programs.

In her free time, Ms. Joy spends time with her family and two young children (one of whom is in her third year attending school here at Golden Hill!). She loves being outdoors, hiking, trail running, and spending time in the sun and traveling to new places.
