Curriculum

All students in grades TK-5 receive 50% of their instruction in English and 50% in Spanish. We do not offer the English only option in grades TK-5. We continue to focus on the dual language immersion (DLI) program at the middle school level, and so our students continue to receive instruction in both English and Spanish.  The goal is for students to be proficiently biliterate, master grade level academic content, develop cross-cultural competencies, and eventually receive the district Seal of Biliteracy on their high school diplomas. We will add 7th grade to the dual language immersion program in 2021-22, and 8th grade in 2022-23. We encourage students who are promoting from a 5th grade dual language immersion program at other elementary schools to continue their DLI education at our middle school. We do offer an English only option at the middle school level, for students who are new to our school and did not receive dual language instruction in elementary school.

All students receive access to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) curriculum. These standards focus on problem-solving and deep conceptual understanding, as well as requiring students to explain their thinking. Golden Hill K-8 students are exposed to content in a variety of ways: through lectures, discussions, readings, video, hands-on learning, and collaborative work, to name a few.

in an effort to make the learning of the Common Core Standards even more relevant and engaging for students, we  implemented a Project-Based curriculum at the middle school level, . The principal and 3 of our middle school teachers spent a collective 35 years working at High Tech High, and are using these experiences, as well as the Buck Institute's "Gold Standard PBL" as we craft exciting learning experiences for our students. This "Gold Standard PBL" focuses on a rigorous, driving question, sustained research, group AND individual accountability, content area expertise, real-world connection, student voice and choice, and authentic exhibitions of student work.
